El Camino Real International Heritage Center
El Camino Real International Heritage Center will tell the story of the first European settlements of North America and the road that made it possible

through exhibitions, trails and programs.

Today you are able drive along the original route in comfort. At the Center visitors will learn how difficult it was for both Pueblo Indians and Spanish colonists to make their way along the Rio Grande, let alone survive the harsh environment and establish settlements in the Chihuahua Desert.

Motorists will gain a greater appreciation of traveling in modern air-conditioned cars —their suitcases tossed in the trunk and their cold drinks within reach in the console—after seeing the array of non-motorized travel from times past exhibit, when wheeled traffic, mule trains, horses and one’s own feet were the only modes of making the arduous journey.

Visitors to performances or events in the outdoor amphitheater will be able to hear the traditional music and songs that once were enjoyed around the campfires that warmed foot and hoof. The music itself reflects the culturally diverse folkways that evolved as people of different ethnicities and backgrounds met on the famous trade route.

El Camino Real International Heritage Center is a New Mexico State Monument, operated in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management in south central New Mexico. The Center will open in the fall of 2005. Until then, tours are available by appointment by calling (505) 854-3600 or (505) 854-3602.
