Visit Millennium Park Chicago
Chicago's new Millennium Park had its grand opening in summer 2004. A 24-acre addendum to the northwest corner of Grant Park erected to celebrate the 21st century, the site is superstar architect Frank Gehry's Chicago debut. Just as he did in Bilbao, Spain, and downtown Los Angeles, Gehry creates light and loopy designs of steel. In this case he frames an outdoor stage in ribbons of titanium and wraps a serpentine pedestrian bridge in the material. Gehry also shares the spotlight at the park with a fountain that includes perpetually changing video images, gardens, a reflective, elliptical-shaped sculpture that Chicagoans affectionately term “The Bean,” and a 300-seat cafeopposite an ice skating rink with picture windows framing Michigan Avenue.
